Understanding and Managing Pelvic Pain in Teens: A Guide to Support and Relief

Pelvic pain in is a common yet often overlooked issue among teenagers, and it can significantly affect their daily lives, from school and social activities to sports and general well-being. At Canberra Children’s Physiotherapy, we recognise the importance of addressing pelvic health early and offering specialised support to help teens navigate this challenging condition. Whether due to menstrual issues, pelvic floor dysfunction, or conditions like endometriosis or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), physiotherapy can play a crucial role in managing pelvic pain and improving quality of life.

What Causes Pelvic Pain in Teens?

Pelvic pain in teens can stem from a variety of sources, often linked to the rapid growth and hormonal changes that occur during adolescence. Some of the most common causes include:

Endometriosis: A condition where the tissue lining the uterus grows outside the uterus on other tissues, causing pain, inflammation, and other symptoms.

Adenomyosis: This occurs when the endometrial lining grows into the muscle wall of the uterus, causing painful periods and pelvic discomfort.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS): This condition affects the ovaries, causing hormonal imbalances that can result in irregular periods, pelvic pain, and other symptoms.

Menstrual discomfort: Many teens experience painful periods, which can sometimes be severe enough to affect their ability to attend school or participate in activities

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: Weak or tight pelvic floor muscles can lead to pain during menstruation, urination, bowel movements or physical activity.

Symptoms to Watch For:

While pelvic pain is common, it's important for parents and teens to recognise when it's more than just a normal part of growing up. Symptoms that may warrant medical attention include:

  • Painful periods that interfere with daily activities or schoolwork.

  • Chronic pelvic pain that persists outside of menstruation, often accompanied by lower back pain.

  • Pain during urination, bowel movements, or physical activities.

  • Fatigue, nausea, or bloating that may accompany pelvic pain.

  • Increased difficulty with sports or movement due to pain, heavy bleeding and on going fatigue

  • Missed school days or social withdrawal due to ongoing pain

Why Pelvic Health Matters for Teens

Pelvic health is a vital part of overall well-being and plays a role in many aspects of a teen’s life. Beyond the physical discomfort, pelvic pain can lead to emotional distress, decreased participation in sports or social activities, and academic challenges. It's important for teens to understand that they don’t have to simply "live with" pelvic pain. Early intervention can help improve quality of life and prevent long-term complications.
