Equipment Prescription
Equipment that grows with them and supports every milestone
Occupational Therapists work closely with families to prescribe assistive technology (AT) equipment to children to help them with their day to day life. This can include devices such as adaptive seating, wheelchairs, specialised car seats, specialised bath seats and hoists. It can also include modifying equipment such as cutlery or clothing or providing supportive devices such as specific pencil grips or braces to support your child’s independence.
Supporting children to play, explore and grow — with equipment designed just for them
Our Occupational Therapists provide equipment assessment and recommendations to children with neurological, neuromuscular, rare-genetic or congenital diagnoses. We work closely with local equipment suppliers to source the best device for your child’s individual needs. Usually when assessing a child’s need for a certain piece of equipment, we will first assess how the child is currently completing daily living skills in different environments to determine what AT solution will be best before arranging an equipment trial and completing a report.
What Equipment do OT’s Recommend?
Not sure what equipment your child needs? We guide you every step - from assessment to funding to set up
We will work with your family to select the most suitable equipment to support your child’s independence and participation. Assistive Technology allows children with disabilities to engage more fully in activities at home, school and in the community.
1. Let’s Chat!
We start with a chat! We talk about your child’s development to date, any relevant medical history, what you require the Assistive Technology for and how it links to your goals.
2. Thorough assessment
1. We will assess how your child is currently moving and how they approach different activities in their day to day life. We might take measurements such as height and weight of your child as well as measure the space the equipment needs to fit.
3. Book Equipment Trial
Once we have completed both our discussion and assessment, we will have a better idea about strategies are likely to be effective to support your child to develop their fine motor skills. We will explain what we are working on and why and provide you some intervention strategies to practice either in clinic or at home (or both!). Sometimes we may need to trial a few different strategies until we work out what solution is best for your child’s individual needs.
4. Trial
We will conduct the equipment trial wherever makes most sense – sometimes this is at the clinic, other times it may be at the equipment suppliers office or in your home. We will see which equipment is best suited to your child and ensure it provides adequate support, useability and generally meets their needs. Once we have selected the most appropriate equipment, we will obtain a quote from the supplier.
5. Report
Usually when going through the NDIS, they require us to write a report. This is usually the longest part of the process as we need to justify why your child requires the specific equipment, what features of the equipment are needed and why and compare the selected device to other similar devices to establish that we have selected the equipment item that is best. Once we have completed this, we will send it to you to submit to the NDIS.
Once the NDIS has approved the funding for the equipment, payment to the supplier can be organised by your NDIS plan manager or by you directly if self-managed (i.e. not to us!). Equipment can often have a lag time as it usually needs to be ordered. Once it arrives, we will book a time with the supplier to fit the device to your child.

-
Please bring any relevant medical summaries or letters, any current pencil grips or cutlery that your child is currently using. If there is a specific zipper or button size that is particularly challenging, it will be helpful to bring this with you also.
-
You don’t require a referral to see us – you can call our reception team or complete the online form HERE (link to waitlist form)
-
We do work with children who are NDIS funded. To access our service we require children to be self-managed or plan managed.
With the recent funding cuts to the NDIS, we really recommend that families are self-managed if able.
-
We require 4 weeks’ notice to write reports, and sometimes up to 6 weeks for complex equipment reports. These reports vary in length substantially, so we will do our best to give you an estimate of how long it will take.
-
Our initial appointments are around 1 hour and follow up appointments are around 45 minutes of face to face time. We usually also book in associated non-face-to-face time with all appointments to allow our therapists to complete any associated administration.
